Quarter 1, Week 9, Oct. 31– Nov. 4, 2016

This is the last week of Quarter 1!  Please check PowerSchool to see that you have completed and turned in all that is due for the Quarter.  We are finishing up our Classification Unit.

Monday-  Students continue with their Alien Invader Story Board, and start thinking of the scientific name of their “alien invader.”
Tuesday- Begin the Dichotomous Key Lab.
Wednesday- Students will complete the Dichotomous Key Lab the first half of class and continue with their Alien Invader Project: including the Alien Invader Rubric, the Alien Invader Template, and an example of an Alien Invader.
Thursday- Continued work on the Alien Invader Project.
Friday- Alien Invader Project and Dichotomous Key Lab DUE.

Quarter 1, Week 8, Oct. 24 – 28, 2016

We will begin working extensively with using Dichotomous Keys, we will conclude this work with a fun Dichotomous Key lab identifying household objects with unique names.  We will continue working with and interpreting scientific names, Genus species and understanding the Animal Kingdom.

Monday– Finish the Classification Quiz  and once finished students will identify these whales using this Whale Dichotomous Key.
Tuesday- Continuation of Dichotomous Keys.  Students identify types of sharks using the shark dichotomous key.
Wednesday- Dichotomous Key of the Pamishan alien invaders and Animal Cards classification by scientific names.
Thursday-  Students will quiz themselves on their understanding of Dichotomous Keys and Animal Classification with this Classification Groups Web sheet and begin the Dichotomous Key Lab.
Friday- Students will complete the Dichotomous Key Lab the first half of class and then begin the FIRST PAGE of the rough draft of their “alien invader” story board.

Quarter 1, Week 7, Oct. 17 – 21, 2015

This week we continue with Classification after concluding last week with two great field trips to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and Bowdoin Coastal Studies Center.

Monday- Complete animal card research.
Tuesday- In Computer Lab to look up science grade and fill in progress report sheet in PowerSchool and retrieve the science folder in google classroom.
Wednesday- Complete animal card research and  compare and contrast their results with each other. Students complete the sheet to compare and contrast their results and a Characteristics of Living Things assignment.
Thursday- Students complete what they have not the last two days and take the Classification Quiz.  Once finished students will identify these whales using this Whale Dichotomous Key.
Friday- Continuation of Dichotomous Keys.  Students identify types of sharks using the shark dichotomous key.

Quarter 1, Week 6, Oct. 11 – 14, 2016

This 4 day week of our Classification Unit is a busy one.

Monday- NO SCHOOL- Columbus Day.
Tuesday- Classification Notes and Pyramid and Classification Slide Show and Slide Show Note-takingClassification Notes and Pyramid Keys.
Wednesday Finish the Classification Pyramid and characteristics of living things work.

Thursday- Students research structural and behavioral adaptations of animals and compare and contrast their results with each other.
Friday- Continue structural and behavioral adaptations of animals.

Quarter 1, Week 5, Oct. 03 – 6, 2016

This week we begin our Classification Unit.

Monday- Students take the Classification Pre-Test– to establish what is already known about classifying life forms.
Tuesday- Movie- Structures and Adaptations and complete this worksheet.
Wednesday- Classification Notes and Pyramid and Classification Slide Show and Slide Show Note-takingClassification Notes and Pyramid Keys.
Thursday Finish the Classification Pyramid.  Classification Sciencesaurus textbook work and characteristics of living things work.  Sciencesaurus Answer Key.
Friday- Students NO SCHOOL!  Teacher Professional Development Day.

Quarter 1, Week 4, Sept. 26-30, 2016

We conclude the Engineering Design Process this week, and we will begin the Classification Unit.  PLEASE RETURN YOUR PERMISSION FORMS ASAP for the field trip to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute.

Monday- Conclude Body Measurement Bar Graph with the Body Measurement Lab Questions sheet.
Tuesday- Students create bar graphs of the various tower heights comparing Day 1’s results to Day 2’s.  Students complete the Engineering Design Process sheet from their Spaghetti tower and fill in the Spaghetti Tower exit ticket.
Wednesday- Classification Unit introduction.
Thursday- Half of the Birch Team go to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute.
Friday- The second half of the Birch Team go to the Gulf of Maine Research Institute.

Quarter 1, Week 3, Sept. 19-23, 2016

Remember, Bar Graphs are used to compare a set of data results.  This week we conclude our Metric System and Bar Graph quick-Unit and begin the Engineering Design Process Unit.
Monday- The Body Measurement Lab and Bar Graph.
Tuesday– Conclude the Body Measurement Labit is HOMEWORK if you do not finish it in class.  Use the Bar Graph model as notes for a complete graph.
OPEN HOUSE IS TONIGHT FROM 6:30 to 8:00.  See you here!
Wednesday Begin the Engineering Design Process.  Today we develop an individual plan for a spaghetti tower after a few notes on the process.
Thursday– Students are put into teams to choose a plan and construct their spaghetti tower.  Reviewed the Engineering Design process cycle.
FridayField trip to Mackworth Island for a day of team-building.
Next week will discuss the best tower design and graph the tower heights for the second attempt’s heights results.

Quarter 1, Week 2, Sept. 12 -Sept. 16, 2016

I hope your first week, last week went very well!  This week, we will focus on graphing and the Metric System.
Monday–  The Inherited Traits Lab– the pre-assessment to graphing. Listed are the classes results from the Inherited Traits Lab.
HOMEWORK: Complete the Interest Survey from last week (just page 1).
Tuesday–  The Inherited Traits Lab
Wednesday– Preview a correct Bar Graph model and The Science Room Scavenger Hunt
Thursday– Practice graphing with the Body Measurement Lab.
Friday– Complete the Body Measurement Lab.
An article on your attention span as compared to a goldfish that we will read in class and questions we will answer…
