Junior Academic English Mid-Year Review

The semester exam represents the opportunity to emphasize the essential instructional concepts presented during this course of study.  Naturally, at this level of learning, you must rely on your ability to synthesize previous instruction in order to compliment your understanding.

PART I   VOCABULARY

MATCHING     The vocabulary section will emphasize usage.  Through analogies and recognizing grammatically correct application in sentences you will express your knowledge of the following words and their definitions.                VALUE- 15 POINTS

PART II     GRAMMAR

PARTS OF SPEECH 

MATCHING      You will be required to express your knowledge of parts of speech by identifying the part of speech of the underline word in each sentence.                                                                                                                                                           VALUE- 10 POINTS

 Noun– a person, place, thing, or idea
Proper noun– a specific person, place, thing, or idea
Compound noun– two or more nouns forming one noun
Pronoun– a word that takes the place of a noun
Adjective– a word that modifies a noun or pronoun
verb– a word that expresses action
Article– the most commonly used adjectives (a, an, the)
Adverb– a word that modifies an adjective, verb or another adverb
Preposition– a word that shows relationship to other words in a sentence
Conjunction– a word that unites other words, usually of common speech
Interjection– a word that expresses strong emotion

SUBJECT/VERB AGREEMENT

MULTIPLE CHOICE  You will be required to select the correct choice of verb to go along with subject expressed in sample sentences for the subject/verb agreement section.                                                                                                        VALUE- 10 POINTS

PART III  LITERATUREThis section of the exam will feature questions related to the literary terms.  While many of these terms have been featured in class discussions involving the assigned novels throughout the first semester, the questions on this section of the mid-year exam will be exclusively about the assigned short stories.

SHORT STORY

The short stories (A Perfect Day for Banana Fish, For Esme’ With Love and Squalor, The Cask of Amontillado, Silent Snow Secret SnowA Good Man is Hard to Find), The Outcasts of Poker FlatsBy the Waters of Babylon, and Young Goodman Brown will provide the content for the literature section of the exam.  You will be required to answer questions relative to Freytag’s Pyramid and the literary terms emphasized throughout the first semester as they relate to the short stories.  The questions will only relate to these mentioned short stories.         VALUE- 40 POINTS

PART 3
ESSAY

You will be required to write a five-paragraph essay over one of the thematic discussion prompts related to the assigned short stories.                        VALUE- 25 POINTS
