Cookie Color Wheel

This fun and delicious activity is a great way to review and refresh your knowledge of the Color Wheel, and will train your color mixing skills so you will be a Color Mixing Master when you start painting your folder!  Frosting will be your “paint”, food coloring will be your “pigment”, and cookies will be your “canvas”.

Quick review of the color groups you’ll need to know:

Primary Colors – the basics: Red, Yellow, Blue

Secondary Colors – mix together 2 Primary Colors: Orange, Green, Purple

Tertiary Colors – the “in-betweens”, mix together a Primary Color and a Secondary Color: Red-Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow-Green, Blue-Green, Blue-Violet, Red-Violet

Neutral Colors – grayish, brownish, mix together small amounts of all 3 Primary Colors

Working in groups of 3, you will be given 20 minutes to mix frosting colors that match ALL the colors on the Color Wheel, and arrange them in correct order in a circle.  This is a graded activity!  I will be looking for:

  1.  Accurate color mixing (How closely do your colors match the color wheel? They can be lighter versions than the ones printed on the color wheel, but the hues should match.)
  2. Correct order (Hint – arrange your cookies in a circle ahead of time, and stay organized.)
  3. Participation and cooperation (everyone in your group should actively participate and work together to accomplish your goal.)

Extra Credit: After your cookies are frosted and arranged correctly, use a Sharpie to draw solid lines connecting the Primary Colors, dashed lines connecting the Secondary Colors, and dotted lines connecting the Tertiary Colors!
