Special Education Programs at Brunswick Junior High School 

Noncategorical special education programs.

There are three noncategorical teachers and three ed techs assigned to assist those teachers. The primary responsibility of these programs is to deliver special education services 6th, 7th and 8th grade students who can participate for the majority of the academic day in regular classes. The focus of this program is:

  • To provide special education classes in reading, language arts and math for students who cannot achieve in a regular academic setting because of the severity of their disability.
  • To co teach in the areas of math and language arts at the seventh and eighth grade level this year and to extend that to the sixth grade level when appropriate.
  • To provide opportunities for special education students to participate in common assessments with accommodations appropriate to the students disability.
  • To provide ed tech support in the areas of science and social studies for those students who would participate in those classes but require more than accommodations to achieve.

Self contained functional life skills program with a focus on basic skill development.

There is one special education teacher and two ed techs in this program. It is a multi graded program with the focus on developing basic skills and pre-vocational skills through an integrated curriculum. The students in this program are working at a level significantly below grade level. Services and skill development are delivered in a specialized classroom with hands on experiential instruction. The focus of this program is:

  • To provide an opportunity for basic skills and survival skill development in order to develop pre-vocational skills.
  • To provide medical and related services (ie: Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy) in a safe therapeutic environment.

Self contained emotional disability program

There is one special education teacher and two ed techs in this program. It is a multi graded program and the focus is on developing basic social skills, addressing emotional disabilities that interfere with the students’ ability to participate in regular classes and to reinforce academic skills through a supplanted regular curriculum when appropriate. The students in this program are often capable of working at grade level. The focus of this program is:

  • To provide support for social skill development and address specific emotional disability issues.
  • To provide academic instruction supplanted from regular academic classes when appropriate until the student can participate in regular mainstream classes.
  • To provide opportunities for special education students to participate in common assessments with accommodations appropriate to the students disability.
  • To provide services specifically for students with emotional disabilities and to work with outside services providers and the students families or caregivers.
