Job Shadowing STEM Requirement
The Brunswick High School STEM Endorsement includes a requirement for all students to have a minimum of six (6) hours of job shadowing experience.
This experience should be in the student’s STEM areas of interest and is to be scheduled and setup by the student. The job shadowing experience can be completed in one or more visits with Site Supervisors, with each job shadowing experience a minimum of a 2-hour experience. Some students will elect to have short visits with multiple Site Supervisors while others will arrange for a longer visit at just one site.
Site Supervisor Requirements
Qualify as a Site Supervisor
Let us know about your interest in becoming a BHS STEM Program Site Supervisor by adding your name and job information on this list managed by a volunteer. We will share your name and job information with the students in the STEM Program and attempt to match students with Site Supervisors.
Coordination
If students identify a fit between their interests and your job or career they will contact you. It is the student’s responsibility to coordinate for the visit and arrange transportation to the job site. Site Supervisors agree to communicate with students (via phone or email) and setup a time for a job shadowing experience. They will coordinate for the student visit and ensure the student has the proper security clearances and personal protective equipment as required for the job site.
Job Shadowing Experience
The student will schedule one or more job shadowing visits of between 2 to 6 hours total. Students may use this job shadowing experience as a significant factor in their long-term college degree choice and eventual career, so please work with the student to identify experiences that are representative of the job. Please share the details of your work responsibilities and the good and the bad about your position to help the student to consider what they might like and not like about the role based on their specific strengths, personality and interests. Also share the career path a student might need to take to qualify for your role (degree requirements, career ladder, etc.) There is no need to offer a project or work experience with the job shadowing requirement, though some students may express an interest in additional internship or volunteer experience.
Follow-up Evaluation
Each Site Supervisor is asked to complete a simple paper or on-line form after the job shadowing experience. This will take just a few minutes and is used by the student to receive STEM endorsement credit for the visit.
