Progress Monitoring

Progress Monitoring is the core of RTI.  Each student has an “action plan,” which is  developed on the basis of the student’s response to the intervention, (this  has been identified through progress monitoring measures.) At BHS, we use STAR as our progress monitoring assessment. It is given every 4-6 weeks to determine if the intervention has been effective.  The progress monitoring report is used as a resource that is presented to the team and decisions are made based upon the effectiveness of the intervention. Keep in mind that the team looks at the “whole” picture of the student. For example, if a student has demonstrated proficiently(at benchmark) on the STAR, yet is failing English class, the team can develop an action plan to explore the possible reasons why the student is not performing as well in class. This could be a short-term intervention; for example, the student may need supplemental instruction in “poetic devices” and/or vocabulary review.  It may lessen the anxiety of the student who is feeling overwhelmed; thus the students’ performance improves and the intervention has been effective. It may also be due to lack of attendance, motivation and engagement. The goal is to reinforce the “essential skills” that is needed for the student to be successful in Tier 1.  For example:
