Assigned Book Reports

Assigned Book Reports

Book Reports play an important part in improving reading proficiency. They provide the student the opportunity to express reading comprehension, summarizing, improved vocabulary, and communication skills. Additionally, book reports allow students to improve oral presentation skills.

Each required book report will be generally assigned each quarter. Students are provided at least 5 weeks to complete their book project and summary.  The book should be a chapter book and at or above their reading level. Check with me, if you have any questions about your book selection.

If you would like feedback on your written piece (Guidelines below), hand in to me no later than a week before your presentation is due.  This will allow you to make any last minute changes to help improve your grade.

Having your written piece done well in advance will allow you plenty of time to practice before you present.  If you have any questions, please ask.  Have fun presenting.

Book Report Written Piece Guidelines

If you are unsure of your book selection, let Mr. Mazerolle review your choice before you start reading.

Your piece should be about 3/4 of a page in length, single-spaced with font 12 and done by book report due date.

1.  An introductory paragraph with the title underlined, the author, and a statement of the main idea.

2.   A short summary of what happens in the story. This is called the plot. The summary should tell about the major characters in the story, the story problem, the setting of the story, and how the problem is resolved. A summary is a condensation of a particular subject. Remember to use general statements.  It tells the general idea without going into all the details. This part should be approximately 150 words in length.

3. The concluding paragraph states the author’s purpose in writing the story. What is the book’s theme or message?  Does the book teach a lesson or a moral? What is your personal opinion: Did you like the book? Did you not like the book? Why or why not? Do you recommend or not recommend this book and why? (Do not let this sound like you are answering a question.)
