Reading

Guiding a student towards a literate life takes:

  • A rich library for choice independent reading.
  • Mini-lessons to support independent work.
  • A solid grounding in phonics and word study.
  • A community of readers with discussions and book clubs.
  • Interactive read-alouds to engage and model.

Read Aloud Time

A routine part of the day for gathering together to listen to a story read by the teacher.
The purpose is to reinforce the use of literacy strategies and build a community experience to promote discussions.  The reading will be interactive and an important part of authentically modeling the strategies and benefits of reading.

Reading Signposts

Along with the CAFÉ menu of strategies, we’ll be learning about Reading Signposts.  This idea came from a conference I attended with the authors, Kylene Beers & Robert E. Probst, of the book Notice & Note: Strategies for Close Reading.  It should help us
to Notice (watch-out for) and Note (think, write or discuss) things to dig deeper into understanding literature.

Our goal:  “Nurture Reading Habits” for life.
Anytime, anywhere, for any purpose!
