Brunswick,Maine & The Civil War

Children and The Civil War
Children played a key role in the Civil War. Many soldiers, especially in the South and at the end of the war, were barely teenagers. Children also served important roles as buglers and drummers with the troops of both sides. Young boys frequently assisted the wounded. They also served as spies, carrying maps and other important documents past unsuspecting soldiers. While most young children from Brunswick escaped direct involvement in the Civil War, many teenagers went off to fight. In the end, families throughout Maine were devastated by the war, as children lost fathers, brothers, and other relatives in the faraway battles.
