Energy Use, Safety & Security

Brunswick School Department needs to comply with several regulating agencies and codes. We understand that it can be confusing when trying to understand the why and why not. The fire department has its concerns with fire safety and hygiene. MMA insurance has its concerns with safety for staff.

School dude linkMaintenance, Tech and Facilities use! simply enter your email and the password for everyone is password.

  • For maintenance requests such as lighting, plumbing, painting, classroom furniture or facilities repairs.
  • For technology assistance, select the “Technology” icon on the right of the page.
  • For Facilities scheduling as a Brunswick Schools staff person, please use this link and select the tab, Schedule Request, and enter your information. Be sure to select one of the maintenance services blocks so your facilities team gets a heads up and they will help get the space ready for you. Why would you want to do this?
  • #1, Brunswick Schools has a lot of demand for classroom space so if you want to do an after school event, music, art etc… you might want to be sure your room stays reserved for you.
  • #2, you may want to host an event or class in your room and this will ensure that you have that time blocked out.

Performance contracts, what do you need to know? BSD has had several energy saving improvement measures over the past few years. These measures have a guaranteed savings by the installing contractors. That guarantee is void if we do not use energy responsibly. That means;

  • We cannot use incandescent lighting in any of our buildings. As a district it has been decided that a fluorescent task light will be allowed to be used on the desktop. Please bear in mind that any fluorescent light bulb needs to be covered if it is less than 7′ above finished floor. Quart halogen floor lamps are not allowed per fire department.
  • Electric space heaters are not allowed in the schools.
  • Personal fans are not allowed unless there is a documented medical need.
  • Personal appliances, coffee pots, microwaves, refrigerators etc…. Each school has areas set up where these are allowed, teachers rooms are the safest place, classrooms pose several safety issues.

H.V.A.C. (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) occupied times; We also need to comply with operating schedules for the heating, cooling and ventilation. An example of that would be the junior high schedule of 7:00 AM until 3:00 PM. Those are the hours that the systems operate at occupied temperatures. The temperatures are set to the unoccupied setting outside of those hours.

Personal Furniture should not be brought into the schools. Most people do not realize that there are fire retardant ratings with furniture. Not all of the schools and or spaces have sprinkler systems in them so we need to be very selective of how many and types of flammables that come into the buildings.

Safety

Some fire safety issues, if you have direct access from your classroom to the outdoors you must maintain a clear egress path to that door.

Please do not block electrical panels with furniture or carts.

Please do not daisy chain outlet strips, more than 1 surge outlet strip connected to each other.

Please do not block the view through the door windows of your space. It is important that you have a clear view of oncoming hall traffic as the door is opened.

Security

Please wear your I.D. badge to work.

If you don’t recognize someone, please ask to see their I.D. or visitor tags. I like to ask them if I can help them find what they are looking for.

If you use a key and are walking through an non-monitored entrance, please don’t let a stranger walk through behind you
