WHAT IS Destination ImagiNation®?

Destination ImagiNation® (DI) is the world's largest creative problem-solving program for kids of all ages.  This non-profit organization teaches life skills and expands imaginations through youth-centered, team-based creative problem solving.

Adult Team Managers oversee the teams and act as guides throughout the process.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO JOIN?

Interested students in grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 may participate in Destination Imagination in Brunswick.   Kindergarten, first, and second graders may participate in the Rising Stars Program.  Each school will have organizational meetings in the fall of each school year to form the teams.  Contact the coordinators of each school for more information.

WHAT DOES A TEAM DO?

Teams of 5-7 students work together during the year to solve their choice of one of 5 Team Challenges. The team then presents their solution to their central challenge and solves an instant challenge at the Zone Destination DI Celebration of Creativity held at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School in March.  Teams also practice Instant Challenges as a way to improve their problem-solving abilities.

Qualifying teams then present their solutions at the Maine State DI Celebration at the University of Maine, Orono in April. Finalists from the State Finals can compete at Destination Imagination Global Finals held in Knoxville, Tennessee in late May.

HOW OFTEN DO TEAMS MEET?

Once a team is formed, the members will decide how competitive they want to be and how often they want to meet. Historically, teams meet once a week beginning in the fall until January when they go to two times per week, and possibly more as the Regional Celebration approaches in March.  Teams who qualify for the State Finals are committed until early April.  Brunswick Teams qualifying for the Global Finals will work through late May.

TEAM MANAGERS NEEDED

In order for teams to participate in Destination Imagination, volunteers are needed to guide the teams throughout the year.  Please contact your school coordinator if you are interested in helping out.  Check www.createme.org for information about upcoming trainings.

APPRAISERS NEEDED

Each team needs to have an adult appraiser to represent them at the Zone Celebration in March.  An evening training will be required for each appraiser previous to the Celebration.  If the team advances to the State Celebration, this person will also be required to appraise in Orono.  Anyone 18 years or older is encouraged to volunteer for this exciting opportunity to see amazing solutions to the team and instant challenges.  Check Maine DI for more information.
