Announcements 10/8

Today is Tuesday, October 8th, and it’s an ORANGE Day.

BHS GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:

A reminder to all 11th grade students – The PSAT will be given on Wednesday, October 16 beginning Period 1/2 and ending at approximately 11:10. Make sure you come prepared with sharpened #2 pencils and an approved calculator. Cell phones are not allowed during testing. Students will report to testing rooms at 7:40. Late Arrival will not be in effect on October 10 for 11th grade students. Juniors who attend a morning Region #10 program will be excused from attendance on Wednesday. Afternoon Region #10 students will have lunch after testing and late bus transportation is provided. PSAT testing will take place on the second floor of the high school and lists are posted outside the classroom doors. Juniors you will test in the Social Studies and English wings. Check ahead of time to find the correct location. If you have questions, ask a teacher or check with the Counseling Office, the Main Office or the Library. To all other grades, classes continue as usual. Students who attend classes in rooms 201-224, check with your classroom teachers for room changes or look for “Room Changes” posted on the 2nd floor.

There is a Freshman Class Meeting during FLEX on Thursday October 17th. Please remember to report to FLEX for attendance. We will be discussing fundraising as well as social media and there will also be a guest speaker.

Thank you to all who participated in writing down your sources of strength and entering into the raffle. Some healthy activities people do to relieve stress are: walk in the woods, read novels, listen to music, go for a run, and sit on the porch at camp. The drawing was moved to THURSDAY. On Wednesday you will have another chance to enter into the drawing. Stay Tuned and keep talking about the things that make you feel happy.

Come down to the Makerspace Custom Lab this month to customize your kicks with some new laces that YOU make! The Library Makerspace is open during the second half of each block and after school.

Are you at least 17 years old? That means you can register to vote! If you are 18 you can participate in this year’s elections on November 5th, and those who are 17 can vote in the upcoming primaries for next year’s presidential election.There will be a voter registration drive happening during lunches in the cafeteria this Wednesday, October 9th. Make your voice heard! Help shape your future! VOTE!

Brunswick Volleyball is hosting a “Dig Green Night”, versus Cheverus on October 8 at 5:30pm in honor of Marcy Cox. The team will have a wall of hope and will be selling Volleyball cards for a dollar or a donation of your choice. If you’d like a card, please contact one of the Varsity girls. All proceeds will be going to the American Cancer Foundation and the Cholangiocarcinoma Cancer Foundation. Please wear green to show your support. There will be a 50/50 raffle as well as a raffle for items donated by local businesses! Let’s make it a full house Brunsiwck! See you there!

Senior Alternate Photos may be emailed directly to the yearbook staff at dragonspirityearbook@gmail.com. A confirmation email will be sent out. Students sending photos via ReplayIt may see their submission online and can also check on the  senior photo list posted in room 135. A reminder to students and advisors of BHS clubs, the yearbook staff needs photos that document your activities and a group photo with a roster.  Photos may be emailed right from your cell phone or computer to dragonsprityearbook@gmail.com or uploaded to replayit.com. The Password is DRAGONS.

There will be a travel information night on October 16th for anyone interested in learning more about the February, 2020 trip to Vietnam. Interested in History? Tour the famous Hanoi Hilton, have dinner with a war veteran, crawl through the Cu Chi Tunnels of the Vietnam War, and visit the War Remnants Museum. Interested in Culture? Learn about Buddhism at the mysterious Am Phu Cave, or try traditional fishing techniques as you paddle in an authentic bamboo-basket boat. Interested in Culinary Arts? Shop in a traditional food market, sample Hoi An Cuisine and take a Vietnamese cooking class! You can even earn Academic Credit while taking the trip of a lifetime! There will also be information about travel to Berlin, Prague, Krakow, and Budapest in April and for Discover Portugal next year. See Mr. Flanagan in Room 211 for more information.

Attention Seniors: Remember to turn in your Diploma/Cap & Gown Information sheet to Ms. Wight in the Counseling Office ASAP, we order these early in the year.  Payment is due by the end of February, however, the form must be in very SOON!  Forms were mailed home this summer and require a parents signature.

ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES:

Do you like art? Do you want to create art without the pressure of assigned projects? Well then, you’re in luck! Artery will begin open studio time after school this Tuesday, from 2:15 to 3:15, and will continue to meet on Tuesday afternoons throughout the year. All levels of artists are invited to Room 114 for an afternoon of exploration, and artistic growth. Materials and instruction are available for all types of art, so come on down and get creative!

Volunteer opportunities! 

  • Pejepscot Historical Society is looking for 4 students who are interested in helping out before snow falls at the Chamberlain Museum to paint the backside of the cast iron fence out front.
  • The Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust is looking for volunteers for both long term and short term projects
  • BJHS is looking for a student who is handy with bikes to replace some bike pedals on the bike desks at the Junior High. They would need to bring their own tools.

COLLEGE VISITS, SCHOLARSHIPS & OPPORTUNITIES BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL:

A representative from Chewonki will be visiting the counseling office on Friday, October 18th at 10:30 am to recruit for Maine Coast Semester to discuss two available Maine Youth Environmental Leaders Scholarships for super-star sophomores!  Sign up in the Counseling Office if you are interested.
