Today is Tuesday, May 14th, and it’s an ORANGE Day.

BHS General Announcements:

The American Red Cross and Mrs. Strout would like to give a big thank you for the recent successful Blood Drive for life-giving blood! BHS had 46 registered donors at the event…22 were first time blood donors! 4 donors gave Power Red donations, collecting 8 units! Altogether, there were 43 successful donations which equates to 129 lives potentially saved. Thank you for giving back to the community, and for making a difference in the lives of others.

Brunswick High School parents and guardians are invited to a presentation on Vaping: The Target Is Our Youth this Tuesday, May 15th, from 6:30 to 7:30 in Crooker Theater. Join Local School Resource Officer and prevention specialists for an interactive presentation on the latest trends in vaping, juuling and other products. Find out what local youths are telling our presenters, see some of the most common devices, and receive tips on how to talk to your teen about this health concern. It’s time for the Annual BHS Student Art Show featuring a variety of art works in various media! Students, parents, guardians, families and the public are invited to the opening reception on Thursday, May 16th, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Come to BHS to see the marvelous student art exhibit on display in the Art wing and the Studios!

Elections for class officers will be taking place in Flex on Monday, June 10th. If you are interested in running as a candidate, please pick up the paperwork that needs to be completed from Ms. Campbell in room 218. The due date for returning this paperwork is Wednesday, May 29th. Make a difference in your school; become a class officer!

Attention students: We will be enforcing our rule in the Cafeteria that, while you can always get a value meal, snacks and bottled drinks cannot be purchased if you don’t have money to pay for it. Our cashiers are happy to let you know your account status.

Brunswick High School Senior Night takes place on Tuesday, May 21st, at 6:00 p.m. in Crooker Theater. Awards and Scholarships will be presented followed by the Senior Slide Show. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the Cafeteria. 

This Thursday, May 16th, is Husson Alive! a free, day-long event where high school students receive an immersive, hands-on experience in various media and marketing workshops. If you’re interested in this event at Husson College, please stop by the Counseling Office. 

Attention Freshmen students, parents and guardians:
 Please support the class of 2022, and visit the Mixed Bags website at and select SHOP/ SHOP to support a fundraiser. Then enter our fundraiser number #935387 and 04011. They sell a variety of bags that are colorful, functional and well designed! Your bag purchase supports the class of 2022! 

Do you like supporting small businesses? Are you an LGBTQ member of ally? Would you like a skirt for a special cause made especially for you? “Sew Fabulous” is taking orders over the next few weeks for PRIDE skirts made with your choice of flag colors, or for any other custom-made skirt. Part of the proceeds will go to PRIDE, Brunswick High School’s Gay Straight Transgender Alliance. See Mr. Arcand in Room 118 for an order form.

This Thursday, May 16th, an Admissions representative from the University of Maine will be in the counseling office to meet with juniors interested in applying to UMaine. They will review your transcripts with you and advise you on courses for senior year and on admissions to your intended major or program.  Interested students should sign up in the counseling office.

There is a Senior Class Meeting on Thursday, May 30th, during FLEX in Crooker Theater.

Beginning on June 24th, free summer lunch will be available in Brunswick in surrounding areas! Keep an eye out for updates about meal sites and lunch times. All kids are welcome ages 0-18, come for the food and stay for the fun! Meals are provided by Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program.  

Volunteer and Community Service Opportunities:

Mid Coast Hospital is looking for volunteers to help serve finger food Friday night, May 17th, from 5:00  to 7:30 during their YARD SALE PREVIEW PARTY. The yard sale is at Merrymeeting Plaza. See Mr. Wilson to sign up for this volunteer opportunity.

Volunteers are needed at the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust PLANT SALE on Saturday, June 1st, the Masonic Hall in Brunswick. There are 2 shifts available: 8:45-11:00 and 10:45-1:00. Help is needed carrying plants and with parking. Please sign up with Mr. Wilson.


Volunteers are needed with MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL CLEAN-UP in Topsham for the New England Mountain Bike Association on two Sundays: May 19th and June 2nd from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Check the website for more information, and sign up with Mr. Wilson.

Attention seniors: Please turn in your community service hours as soon as possible in order to be considered for recognition during Senior Awards Night which is the evening of May 21st at 6:00 p.m.

Announcements for Clubs and Activities:

Do you like games, Dungeons and Dragons or other sci-fi/ fantasy genre activities? Come play Magic the Gathering on Mondays after school in Ms. Campbell’s room, Room 218. Never played before? No problem! Come and learn!

Interact meets on Mondays after school in Room 214. All are welcome! Come be a part of making BHS and the greater community an even more special place for everyone! There will be an Officer-led Interact meeting today after school to discuss Flex sign-ups on Thursday and Stamp out Hunger on May 11th.

Girls Who Code is back! Learn to Code with Bowdoin College students! Meetings will be in Room 139 during FLEX on Thursdays. Both new and returning students are welcome!

Artery has open studio time every Tuesday from 2:15 to 4:00 p.m. All levels of artists are invited to Room 114 for an afternoon of artistic growth, and exploration. Materials and instruction are available for all types of art, so come on down and get creative! 

Go Club meets Thursdays in Mr. Goldstone’s room, Room 115. Go is an ancient Chinese board game, played by more than 40 million people worldwide. All are welcome to come learn to play or join the team! 

Like robotics? Plan on joining BrainSTEM Wednesdays after school in the CAD Lab from 2:15 to 4:00. All are welcome. See Mr. Clarke for more information. 

Fandom Club meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month in the Library’s Makerspace. All are welcome! The next Fandom Club meeting is on May 14th.

Pride, Brunswick High School’s Gay Straight Transgender Alliance meets Thursdays during Flex in the pottery room across from Room 118. The goal of the Gay Straight Transgender Alliance is to provide a safe, supportive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and straight ally youth to meet and discuss issues of concern, and to work to foster a school environment free of discrimination, harassment, and intolerance; all are welcome. New members are welcome! Please see Mr. Arcand in Room 118 with any questions.

College Visits, Scholarships & Opportunities Beyond High School:

There are opportunities for Apogee Adventures 2019 summer tuition discounts. Maine-based Apogee Adventures is committed to developing confidence, character, and community mindedness through carefully designed summer adventures for students between the ages of 11 and 18. See Mr. Wilson for information on a limited number of reduced tuition opportunities for program during summer 2019.

There will be a representative from the United States Marines in the Counseling Office on Thursday, May 16th, at 9 a.m. 

A representative from the United States Army will be in the Counseling Office on Monday, May 20th, at 9 a.m.

A representative from MCPHS – Massachusetts College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences – will be in the Counseling Office on Thursday, May 23rd, at 1:00 p.m.

Mr. Wilson has applications for the 2019 Maine Youth Law Enforcement Explorer Academy that takes place June 24-28th. Scholarships money may be available. See Mr. Wilson for details.
