Announcements 10/1

Today is Monday, October 1st, and it’s a BLACK Day.
 
General Announcements:
ANY seniors with an Early Action or Early Decision Deadline of November 1st MUST return the Senior Folder/Packet to their counselor no later than today, October 1st, and they MUST speak with the teachers who are writing their college recommendations by the end of the day, as well. If there are any questions, seniors should see their counselor.
 
The BHS Senior Class group photo for the Yearbook will be taken in front of the school on Wednesday, October 3rd, by the Pierce Studio. All seniors should report to the front of the building at 7:40 a.m. for the 7:45 photo. The Region 10 bus will be picking students up from out front. 
 
Are you taking the SAT on Saturday, October 6th? If you are taking the October 6th SAT, and would like to run through some problems to warm up, sign up for Mrs. Bradley’s help session. We will meet in Room 104 after school this Wednesday, October 3rd. The sign-up is on Mrs. Bradley’s office door, or just find her and let her know you’d like to attend!
 
MountainFilm of Telluride, Colorado, will be presenting a free film screening this Thursday, period 3/4, in Crooker Theater before its stop at Frontier Cafe on its worldwide tour. This collection short films will take approximately 55 minutes. Both students and teachers are invited to attend This presentation is being promoted by BHS students participating in an Extended Learning Opportunity in Film and Media Studies. A reminder to seniors: Start getting your alternate senior portraits turned in via email or to the Yearbook box in the Main Office. The file size  should be 1.2 megabytes, or 1200 x1800 pixels, and should be labeled with your last name then first name. Photos may be emailed to dragonspirityearbook@gmail.com.
 
School pictures have been rescheduled for Friday, October 12th, and Tuesday, October 16th. Pictures will be taken on the stage in Crooker Theater. Everyone should have their photo taken. ID cards will be issued from these pictures. Union School students or make-up students may drop in throughout the two days around scheduled English classes.

Sports Announcements in from the Coaches:
 
Boys and Girls Cross Country: This Saturday the Boys and Girls Cross Country team competed in the Festival of Champions, a 65-team meet consisting of teams from all over New England and Canada. The boys, led by Will Shaughnessy who finished 3rd overall, and followed by Tyler Patterson, Cam Ashby, Andrew Chingos, Joey Valliere, Aiden Simmons, Chris Tucker and Dan Lyons bested the field of 850 runners and came away with the overall win! Also running for BHS were medal winner Adam Nussbaum, Dolan Pols, Felix Battle and Webster Taylor. The girls, led by Margaret Chingos and Adeline Dolley, and followed by Kaeden Green, Desiree Tanner and Chloe Brzozowski, finished in the middle of the pack of 615 competitors Congratulations!
 
Girls Varsity Soccer: The varsity team won its game against Skowhegan 3-1. Goals were scored by by Anna Kousky (2) and Alexis Guptil, with assists from Emma Banks and Isabella Banks. Brunswick had 23 shots, while Skowhegan had 12. Aisley Snell had 9 saves for the Dragons. Skowhegan was a tough, aggressive opponent and it was a physical encounter between two good teams. Emma Banks, Marley Groat, Bailey Hartill, Anna Kousky and Charlotte MacMillan had especially outstanding games.
Girls JV Soccer: 

The long trip up to Skowhegan proved worthwhile for the Brunswick girls JV soccer team on Saturday. Playing in a new formation, the team passed well, keeping possession for the majority of the game, and walked away with a 3-0 win. Goals were scored by Mia DeSantis, Elena Palmer, and Emilienne Augustine-Biddings. Strong games were played by Captain Molly Taub and solid defenders Riley Turgeon and Riley McAllaster. The Dragons are still undefeated, with five games remaining in the season. Way to go, Brunswick!
Boys JV Soccer Team: Over the weekend, the JV boys soccer team continued its winning streak by beating a Skowhegan team made up of mainly varsity players, 1-0. Both sides were evenly matched for the first twenty minutes of the game, until Spencer Marquis found Isaac Albaugh on fantastic throw in. Isaac took the ball midstride, and played a beautiful floating ball into Fernando Saldana, who used a pristine header to place the ball in the top corner of the net. Nasty Nando’s goal turned out to be all the Dragons needed for the win, as their defense held a clean sheet the rest of the game thanks to excellent performances by Lucas Spiro, James Kousky, Daniel MacKillop and Sam Foye at the defensive line.
 
Girls Varsity Volleyball: Brunswick/MTA Girls Volleyball beat Gardiner 3-2 (scores 18-25, 25-19, 11-25, 25-21 and 15-12). Brunswick/MTA was lead by Naomi Martin (MTA) with 5 aces, 5 kills and 7 digs; Kathleen Trapp (BHS) with 2 aces, 10 kills, 6 digs and 2 blocks; Sabrina Cooper (BHS) with 3 aces, 3 kills and 2 blocks; Kassidy Dixon with 4 aces and 9 digs; and Lauren Whitlock (BHS) with 17 assists, 7 digs, 5 digs and 6 aces.  Brunswick/MTA will be home on Tuesday against Wells. Come out and cheer on the team!
 
Girls Varsity Field Hockey: The team won its game against Hampden 4-0. Brunswick and Hampden were at a standstill in the first half heading into the break at 0-0. Brunswick came out with a new fire in the second half with goals scored by #5 Sara Scrapchansky assisted by #32 Lauren Jacobs; #5 Sara Scrapchansky assisted by #12 Shea Sullivan; #5 Sara Scrapchansky assisted by #12 Shea Sullivan; and #17 Kelsey Sullivan assisted by #32 Lauren Jacobs. Ainsley Harrower was in goal with 6 saves. Brunswick defense and midline led the push up the field to secure the opportunities to score. Brunswick had 18 shots on goal;

Hampden had 7 shots on goal. Brunswick;s record is now 3-8. The team takes on Lincoln Academy at Home on Wednesday, October 3rd, at 3:30.
Announcements for Clubs and Activities:
 
Interact Club will meet today after school in Room 214 to discuss October service events. A guest from the Brunswick Recreation Center will be there as well. New members are welcome to attend any time. See Mr. Wilson, Phoebe Churney or Katherine Hartnett with any questions.
 
Yearbook will meet today and Wednesday after school in Room 135. New members are welcome, as well as those who would like to help with the senior section. 
 
Freshmen class officers should plan to meet this Thursday at Flex.


There will be a meeting of the Action Team on Tuesday, October 2nd, in the Multi-purpose Room from 2:15 – 2:30. This meeting is for old and new members. Are you interested in Random Acts of Kindness and Paying It Forward and having fun while doing it? Well then, this Team is just for you!​
 
Attention all Outing Club members: Our first trip of the year is scheduled for Sunday, October 14th.  We will be heading up to Camden to hike Mount Megunticook for the spectacular views of some of Maine’s best Fall foliage. To prep for our trip, we will be having a meeting this Thursday, October 4th, in Mr. McCullough’s room during FLEX.  Please see Mr. McCullough or Mr. Stocker for passes or questions.
The Environmental Club will hold its first meeting of the year today from 2:20 to 3:00 in Room 231. If you have a strong interest in the environment and ideas to make our community a better place, we need you to attend!
There will be a short Science Fair meeting this Thursday, October 4th, during FLEX in Mrs. Dumont’s room, Room 223. This is for anyone interested in participating or just wanting more information!  All are welcome to get involved – it does not require any experience, only an inquiring mind!
 
RunBrunswick is seeking Student Board Members! RunBrunswick is a community nonprofit raising money to help renovate the Track and Field facility at BHS. We are looking for interested Brunswick High School students to join a student subcommittee of our board of directors. Primary responsibilities will be contributing content to social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram & Twitter), contributing to monthly meetings of our board of directors, and bringing your creative energy and knowledge of BHS Track and Field to our fundraising effort. If you are interested, please email a paragraph expressing your interest and your ideas about how you can contribute to Barry Logan, RunBrunswick President, at runbrunswick@gmail.com by Thursday, October 4th. The first Prom Committee planning session will be held today at Flex in Room 135 with Mrs. Driscoll.
Attention students, staff and parents/guardians: Do you have photos of great activities at BHS that would be great to include in the Dragon Spirit Yearbook? If so, go to Replayit.com and find our school, use the password “dragons” and upload you photos into our Yearbook website!
 
The Dragon Boutique is now open! What’s the Dragon Boutique? It’s a free clothing exchange for all students and staff! Donate clothes you no longer want or feel free to stop by and take clothes you’d like! The Dragon Boutique is located in Mrs. Burnette’s room, Room 112, and is open before school, during Snack Break, and during lunches. Come check it out!
